This has been a blog that is almost 3 years in the making. When the Coronavirus pandemic began in March 2020 pretty much everyone on earth was forced inside and to shelter in place. Think about that for a second, we were all literally forced inside of our homes because of an airborne virus! (At least we were here in Illinois). That's fucking wild man. That's some Last of Us type shit. (Big shoutout to the hitters over at HBO for making that show what it is and Pedro Pascal for being fucking awesome at acting).
I always remembered during an episode of the Ryen Rusillo podcast in 2020 he mentioned that the pandemic provided a unique opportunity for everyone to take a chance on their dreams, whatever they may be. (Ryen Rusillo's "Life Advice" segment of his podcast is arguably the best thing in the podcast business.) The world basicially shut down and if you were young and healthy there was some extra time to write that script or start your own business. I thought that then could be the time to start writing about golf. I created a website, brainstormed some ideas....and then never wrote anything. I literally paid for a website service and domain for 2 years and never wrote anything. Shocker! I was scared! Scared to put myself out there and see what the world might think and say. That was then.
This past weekend Chris Kirk won the Honda Classic in a playoff over Eric Cole. This win is extra special for Chris Kirk because it is his first win on the PGA Tour since 2015 and first win since he revealed that he struggled with depression and alcoholism during points in his career. It was really sweet to see Chris Kirk win again and climb that mountain he probably never thought he would climb again a couple years ago. (Chris Kirk sat down with the PGA Tour in 2019 and discussed his struggles in an interview here).
While I haven't struggled with depression and alcoholism or faced the pressures of being a professional athlete, I have struggled with things that a lot of people struggle with. Like time management (video games are fun), being courageous (the jury's still out on this one), and wondering if I am good enough or not to be a golf writer and chase that dream. (Does anybody know the answer to that question?)
The point is this, I am taking that chance and taking that first step. I am no longer scared and like in the movie Risky Business, in which Tom Cruise plays a smart, dorky high school student named Joel struggling with his social life and the impending challenge of college his friend Miles, played by Curtis Armstrong, delivers one of my favorite movie quotes, "Sometimes you gotta say "What the Fuck", make your move. Joel, every now and then, saying "What the Fuck", brings freedom. Freedom brings opportunity, opportunity makes your future." Sidenote: is Miles in Risky Business one of the smartest dipshit high school characters ever? He might be. But like most high schoolers he is probably just full of shit. Either way this movie quote is inspirational!
Unlike Cruise in Risky Business, I hope this website doesn't lead me down a path where I drive my parents' Porsche into Lake Michigan, but I am finally ready to say what the fuck?! On this website, you will find articles and blogs about things I am interested in, especially golf and the content that is generated by it. Cheers!
